With the advent of free-to-air channels like BBC and ITV, it makes it easier to watch UK TV online for free. Discover the best way to watch British TV.
If you are trying to get British TV on the internet or via a streaming connection, then my guess is you are probably abroad. It’s always been a bit of a minefield trying to get British TV channels online especially when living or working away from home.
This was mainly down to geo-blocking and this still happens with certain TV channels. In this article I will show you the best ways to watch UK TV over an internet connection and also how to get past geo-restrictions.
IPTV or Streaming Online?
There’s more than one way to get all your favourite UK TV channels but by far the easiest way is by using IPTV on a device connected to your TV.
If you stream online it’s generally poor quality unless you sign up to a subscription service. These live streaming sites are not to be recommended and they are full of advertisements and you could end up with malware on your PC or laptop.
If you don’t have a Smart TV then the best way to get free UK TV channels is to buy a TV box and connect it to your TV. If you already have a Smart TV you can still access the UK channels with the methods in this article.
The 2 ways I am going to show you will allow you to get all Premium and free-to-air channels free (option 1) or with a small subscription (option 2).
1) IPTV on an Android box
IPTV is television delivered over the internet (or online). A lot of companies are going down this road now and it is very popular in South East Asia.
An internet infrastructure is cheaper and easier to build and maintain compared to say a satellite or cable system. This opens up a whole new World of TV for us consumers.
What do you need?
- Android TV Box
- Internet connection (minimum 10Mb/s)
- TV with HDMI port (generally)
That’s basically all you need. Once you have your Android TV box it’s just a case of connecting to the Play Store and downloading the necessary software.
Minimum specs to look for are Android 6.0 operating system and at least 2GB of RAM. I also recommend the Amlogic S912 processor which will give you a faster performance.
Which software is best for Free UK TV Online?
I prefer to use Kodi purely because it is more flexible and you have more options if some channel servers are not working. Mobdro is another free app but this cannot be installed from the Play Store so it has to be installed via the APK file (side-loaded).
Also, with Mobdro you are rather limited. It automatically selects one stream for you, but if that stream is not good you don’t have the choice to select another one.
For that reason, I will focus on Kodi and how you can get all the UK channels free.
How to install and use Kodi
Once you have installed the latest version from the Play Store, you will have a very clean but basic version of Kodi on your TV box. If you are not familiar with Kodi this could look quite daunting but the set up I will tell you about will make everything a lot easier.
It’s worth mentioning that Kodi is losing add-ons regularly which is due to the ongoing law suits and copyright infringement. Kodi is not illegal and it isn’t illegal to use it if you access content that isn’t subject to copyright.
It is open source software so when an add-on is closed down new add-ons start appearing. It’s kind of similar to Pirate Bay and when that was closed down a clone appeared on another domain. It’s yet to be seen what the future holds for Kodi add-ons that breach copyright but this has been ongoing for some time.
The best and easiest way to get all the content you want is to add a custom Kodi Build. Once this is installed you will never need to install another add-on and can access pretty much everything. You will be able to watch BBC, ITV, Sky Sports, BT Sport, Dave, etc.
To get more details you can check out my other article and option #3 explains in detail how to add a Custom Build.
UK TV with VPN
Why use a VPN?
Well, a VPN will protect your IP address and location and also allow you to access UK TV channels that may be geo-blocked outside of the UK. PureVPN are one of the top providers and one account will allow you to use their service across 5 of your devices at the same time.
Right now you can get PureVPN for only $2.95 / month if you sign up for 2 years. This still only comes to $70 total and it is super easy to use with Kodi or Mobdro.

2) IPTV on an MAG TV box
This service is not free but subscriptions with NTV (my recommended IPTV supplier) start at only €14.95 / month and this subscription can also be used on an Android TV box as well as online via a web browser like Chrome or Internet Explorer.
If you want to use the MAG TV box with a subscription these start at €29.95 / month but this gives you access to the menu shown in the image above and a 14 day catch up feature on selected channels. Check out my video below which was taken in Malaysia.
The MAG box subscription cannot be used in the UK due to copyright issues and if you are in Spain you won’t be able to use NTV. However, you can use another company called White Label and they offer exactly the same packages as NTV.
The MAG boxes have different specs and you can choose between MAG 250, 254 or 256. Some of these boxes have built-in WiFi and these are suffixed with the letter “w”. The MAG 256 is the newest box and has a faster processor but any of these will suffice.
What do you need?
- A MAG TV box
- Internet connection (minimum 5Mb/s)
- TV with HDMI port
If you register with NTV you can get a Free 3 day trial to check it out. This is available on all subscription packages. This will allow you to test it for yourself before choosing a package.
Once you are registered with NTV you will need to add their portal address to the MAG box. When that is done you can get your Free Trial from NTV. They have an online chat for customer support and you can contact them there.
They will assist you in adding the portal and for your free trial. You can also check out all of their packages on their website. Register Free with NTV here.
