This box has more than the minimum recommended specs that I like to follow so it could be a good buy. The price is definitely in the right ballpark for a good deal.
The 3GB of RAM will make a big difference using the application software and if you are into gaming it could swing it in your favor. There are ventilation slots on the sides for heat dissipation and the box is made from white plastic casing.
Please be aware of the massive fluctuations in prices online. If you buy this from Geekbuying you could save yourself $54.91 which is huge considering the box is $64.99 for best price.

This box benchmarked on AnTuTu at 41,000 which is pretty standard for the S912 SoC and to be expected. It has a nice launcher interface and you can change the wallpaper on the launcher.
The WiFi speeds on the 5GHz band are fantastic and you can easily get 200Mb/s download speeds which is very high for a TV box with these specs. It’s still advisable to hardwire it and this will give you a faster and more stable connection.
This box will give you DTS passthrough and Dolby audio with Kodi which performed well with no glitches. All files played back very well too including the 4K files with absolute ease.
Gaming was tested and it handled highly demanding games with no issues. You will be able to download any game from the Play Store and they will work well.
There is a notification bar on the launcher menu which can be hidden and brought back if you want to access other apps. The 3GB of RAM allows you to multi-task with different apps and the box performed well with this task.
The remote is a bit different to some of the more generic ones but it has limited functionality so an air mouse or wireless keyboard with track pad is definitely recommended.
The box comes pre-loaded with several apps including Mobdro and Netflix for viewing media content. With Netflix you need a subscription but Mobdro is a free TV app which cannot be downloaded from the Play Store so they have saved you some time by installing this for you.
This box should have the latest firmware already but if you are looking to download it for an existing box you can download it here.
Pros and Cons
Things I liked:
- Excellent price
- WiFi speeds
- Video playback
- Gaming performance
- Flexible launcher and settings
- Notification bar
Things I didn’t like:
- Remote control
- No power on/off button
TX8 MAX Price Comparison
As mentioned this TV box has varying prices depending on where you look. I decided to do a quick comparison to show you how the prices are different on all of the online stores.
- Geekbuying $64.99
- Gearbest $66.99
- Amazon $99.99
- eBay $119.90
If you purchase this from Geekbuying they will deliver Worldwide and you can choose your plug of preference to suit your own country. They also ship for free. There are various bundles available and you can upgrade this box to 32GB if you prefer.
The 16GB of ROM will give you approx. 11GB free with the apps that are pre-installed but with Android 6.0.1 you can use external memory and format as internal memory.
Using the TX8 MAX with Mobdro or Kodi
Both of these apps offer free TV viewing but that doesn’t mean it is legal. If you buy this box from Amazon it won’t come with apps that are fully loaded which allow illegal streaming.
That’s not the case with Geekbuying (yet) but that’s not to say they won’t follow suit at some point. It’s advisable to download the latest software anyway, whether it is Kodi or Mobdro.
This box comes loaded with Kodi 16.1 which isn’t safe to use due to a recent hacker alert. Read more about the security risk and why you should download the latest version.
Kodi can be downloaded from the Play Store but Mobdro has to be installed via the APK installation file. I recently published an article about using Mobdro and how to install.
Why you should use a VPN
There are many benefits but the most important one is to protect against prosecution. In the news today there was an article that confirmed the authorities are checking IP addresses of anyone accessing illegal content that is subject to copyright.
Allegedly they are passing these IP addresses to lawyers who may decide to take it further. A VPN will allow you to use the TX8 MAX without worrying about this.
Read more about the benefits and how to use a VPN.
Alternative TV boxes
If you want a box with similar specs there are other options but you may struggle to get a different box at the same price as this one. Some alternatives with 3GB of RAM include the following:
