The manufacturer claims the Stealth TV box is legal. Right now you can get it at discount. Read my review before getting ripped off with this Kodi box.
The manufacturer of this OTT box say they are flying below the radar but above the competition. Quite a snappy quotation if you ask me, but they didn't fly below MY RADAR!
I'm writing this to try and stop you from getting ripped off with this over-priced over-hyped TV box! I have nothing to gain or lose if you buy this or not. I am not affiliated to them in any way.
Before I get to my final verdict I will take a closer look at what they offer and I will show you some alternatives that will be better and cheaper than this media player.
Who are Stealth?
There's not a lot of information on the company but I can tell you they are located in Woodstock, Georgia and they have been around since 2014. They have a few videos on YouTube showing demos and set up.
The first demo video is a bit basic and it's one guy with a video camera on a tripod aimed at the TV. No big deal there, but it's not very professional. The money they charge for the box should allow them to invest in a better inline recording system.
Stealth TV and Kodi
Stealth utilize free TV software called Kodi. This was formerly known as XBMC (X-Box Media Center). The best place to download it is from the Play Store but it can also be installed from the official Kodi website.
This free software allows you to access third-party addons that provide links to content hosted elsewhere. You are not actually downloading any content, merely accessing it on a server elsewhere.
It's a bit like surfing the internet through links. Anyway, Kodi has been in the news recently due to copyright issues with these third-party addons. Some authorities have even gone to the European courts to get certain content blocked.
In the UK they managed to pass a law allowing them to get the internet providers to block servers that hosted this content. All of these addons are available on Kodi and this is what Stealth perceive to be legal.
Is the Stealth TV Box Legal?
Well, none of us are legal eagles but if content is being blocked it's because of copyright infringement. That in itself is committing an offence so providing links to such material could be regarded as illegal.
It's a bit of a grey area and it's kind of similar to owning a laptop. You can also access illegal content via links on the laptop so does that make a laptop illegal? I'm sure you can see my point here.
To counter the copyright issues, Kodi decided to take steps and tried to distance themselves from pirate streams and addons. When you install this open-source software it's just a basic install.
If you are a bit of a Kodi novice, it can be quite daunting trying to get addons installed and set up. Companies like Stealth have jumped all over this and think they can charge what they want.
That's where I come in. I am here to help and show you how to get the best system at the best price. There's arguments for and against the legalities for this TV box but I'll show you how to avoid prosecution.
Stealth believe their product is legal due to a recent FCC ruling on "free internet rules" but there's nothing stopping these being challenged at a later date.
There's not a lot of information except that it's a standard OTT box loaded with 2GB of RAM. They do a comparison with the Roku 3, Apple TV and Chromecast - all of which have only 512MB of RAM (0.5GB).
That's rather convenient and shows a lack of transparency in my opinion. They don't reveal much more of their own specs but I can tell you that 2GB of RAM is pretty standard these days.
It has 8GB of internal memory (storage) and 2 x USB slots. It also has a standard SD card reader slot. There is a Quad Core processor which is also standard. There is no external antenna and the box looks nothing special to me. I've seen similar OTT boxes selling for $30 like the M8S Pro.
Pros and Cons
How to Avoid Prosecution
The only way to stream safe these days is with a VPN. This will mask your IP address and allow you to access content that may be geo-blocked. It means your ISP won't be able to block you or sell your internet history to anyone.
That's a recent development in the States. Your internet provider is allowed to sell your online history to the highest bidder. That means they will know what you are streaming.
A free VPN won't work due to lack of servers and limited bandwidth. But a good VPN isn't expensive in today's market. I use PureVPN and you can get their premium service for a special offer of $1.91 if you sign up from the link below. This can be used across all of your devices up to a maximum of 5 simultaneously.
There's more good news. Why do I like PureVPN? Apart from the low price, they also have a Kodi addon! That means you can open it inside Kodi and connect straightaway.
Anything you access after that is covered by the encrypted data in the VPN tunnel.
Stealth Box Alternatives
I have reviewed 100's of TV boxes and I know for a fact you can get a far superior box than the Stealth for a fraction of the price.
I recently purchased and reviewed the Tanix TX8 MAX which is loaded with 3GB of RAM, latest Android OS and built around the S912 SoC latest processor. It comes pre-loaded with latest Kodi V17. Price? A very impressive $64.99.
Another good alternative is the Beelink GT1 which I use when I want to watch VOD on Kodi. It comes with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of ROM. Powered by Android 7 and also built around latest S912 SoC. Priced at only $62.99.
How to Set Up Kodi
Both of these offer exactly the same as the Stealth box. The only possible difference is lack of Kodi set up. Don't worry too much about that because I am going to show you in a 2 minute video how you can do this yourself.
This will add a Kodi Build called No Limits Magic which will give you access to everything you need. It will install a nice interface like below with changing wallpapers and all links to content updated regularly.
A paid alternative
If you are still worried about using Kodi to replace a cable TV subscription there is a better quality service that offers much more and is already set up for you.
Kodi is great as a freee TV app but for watching live TV channels it's sometimes a bit inconsistent. Buffering can occur a lot especially at peak times but there's a few things you can do to reduce buffering.
It still may not be good enough to use as a main TV system so I want to tell you about how I watch TV these days. This system allowed me to cancel my cable TV in Malaysia and saves me money every month.
Whilst it's not free, it's a lot less than what I paid before and I get access to the TV channels that I want. Android/iOS Packages start at €16.95 for 550+ channels. MAG TV Box subscriptions start at €19.95.
This concludes my review for the Stealth Box. I'd love to hear your opinions and whether you think it's worth buying or not? Feel free to leave comments below.
