Another Budget box with poor specs. This NEXSMART D32 TV Box Review takes a look at the Pros and Cons and checks out the performance with Kodi and YouTube.
Technology is moving at a fair rate of knots but you can still buy older TV boxes that are shipped with old specs. Why would you want to though?
Well, if you are on a shoestring it could be a good option. You can get this TV box for just over $30. It has been upgraded with Android 6.0 now which is great if you want to use the SD card for internal memory.
If you want to use this box with Kodi you will have to install and set it up yourself. If you are a bit of a novice with Kodi I will be including links throughout this article which will help you to get set up.
NEXSMART D32 Android TV Box Full Review
Price: $30.99 + FREE shipping
Best place to buy: Amazon
Product size: 7.2 x 4.6 x 1.6 inches
Weight: 9.6 oz.
Connections: Ethernet & WiFi
Guarantee: 1 year
Amazon US rating: 3.5/5
The box is made from plastic casing and has ventilation slots underneath for heat dissipation. There are 4 rubber pads to lift it off the base and help with air flow.
There is no Gigabit Ethernet which means the speeds won’t be as good. It’s advertised as a 4K TV box but as you will discover it can’t play 4K files without jittering or crashing.
What’s in the box?
- 1 x D32 TV Box
- 1 x I/R remote control (batteries not included)
- 1 x Power Adapter
- 1 x HDMI cable
- 1 x User manual
- OS: Android 6.0 Marshmallow
- CPU: RK3229 Quad Core Cortex-A7 1.5GHz 32-bit
- GPU: Penta Core HD Graphics
- 1GB of RAM
- 8GB of eMMC ROM
- 2 x USB 2.0 ports
- USB disk and USB HDD support
- SD card reader
- H.265 video decoding
- VP9 video decoding
- 4K2K SHD video
- Single Band WiFi 802.11b/g/n 2.4GHz
- 10/100M Ethernet RJ-45
- Wireless mouse support
- 1 x AV port
- 1 x SPDIF port
Due to the poor WiFi speeds on this I would recommend using the Ethernet connection at all times. It struggled to play any 4K files without jittering and some wouldn’t even play. These were tested from an external drive.
You won’t get any DTS passthrough with Kodi, it constantly cuts in and out. Mostly it will be fine for 720p files on YouTube. Games with heavy graphics will struggle to play.
The TV box was benchmarked on AnTuTu and returned a total score of just over 23,000 which is one of the worst I have ever reviewed. Basically, if you can hard-wire it to your router and use it for watching low or medium quality streams on Kodi you might just get away with it.
Pros and Cons
The only thing this box has going for it is the price in my opinion. The negatives are due to the poor specs and limited performance. The following is probably justified for the Cons:
- 1GB of RAM and 8GB of ROM
- Remote control
- RK3229 processor didn’t perform well
- Video playback
- Poor WiFi speeds and single band WiFi only
- No Gigabit Ethernet
- No external antenna
NEXSMART D32 on Amazon
It’s worth noting that the D32 on Amazon UK is powered by Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and not Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Only Amazon US appears to have Android 6.
On Amazon US, the box is rated 3.5 out of 5 stars based on 83 customer reviews at the time of writing. I have listed below some of the positive and negative comments from Amazon customers.
“It’s an OK box kind of lacks speed wifi connectivity is sub par works best with Ethernet as expected.”
“It is really slow to access the Kodi applications. It takes a really long time to stream…”
“This box freezes all the time and has to have power plug pulled to reset it horrible product…”
“Great device no problem with this box and full of features!”
These comments are typical of some problems that users have been facing. It’s to be expected for a box with these specs and that is the reason why the price is so low. These prices do change from time to time so please check latest price before making a decision.
NEXSMART D32 with Kodi
From my earlier comments and some of the Amazon customer reviews you can see where the main issues lie. Connectivity should definitely be by Ethernet but even then you may face some issues with buffering.
If you are a Kodi user then you will know how frustrating it can be trying to search for movies and TV shows with one of these remote controls. A wireless keyboard is pretty much a necessity. You can check out my recommendations by clicking here.
The other issue with using Kodi these days is copyright infringement. Kodi is very much in the news these days and popular add-ons are disappearing daily due to law suits. TVAddons was one of the common ones and that has also disappeared now.
If you are looking for some alternatives I published an article recently which explains how to install some excellent add-ons which will give you everything you need including movies, sports and TV shows.
If you do intend using Kodi it’s advisable to use a VPN. This will stop you from being prosecuted for accessing streams that are deemed to be illegal. It will also bypass any bandwidth throttling that your ISP may practice.
My VPN supplier has a Special Offer on right now and you can get their VPN for only $2.95 / month. If you want more information on this VPN and how to use it with Kodi, click here to read my article.
