MyGica ATV 1800e Review | Why You Need To Update The Firmware

By | August 10, 2017

MyGica are one of my favorite manufacturers and do make great products. In this MyGica ATV 1800e review discover why the firmware should be updated.

This MyGica box is powered by Android 4.4 Kitkat but there is a firmware update which will update the operating system to Android 5.1 Lollipop.

Why is this important?

If you want to use this box to run the latest version of Kodi then you will need to update it. Kodi v17 isn’t compatible with Android 4.4 Kitkat. You will also need to install the latest Kodi if you want to remain hack-proof. More on that later.

What’s in the box?

  • 1 x Smart TV Box
  • 1 x I/R Remote

  • 1 x User manual
  • 1 x HDMI cable

  • GPU: ARM Mali-450 Octa Core up to 600MHz
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16GB of eMMC flash storage

  • OTA update function
  • Dual band WiFi 2.4GHz/5GHz
  • Ethernet port 10/100M
  • SD card expandable up to 32GB
  • HDMI 1.4

This box will play any 4K video file without any issues at all. It handles them very well and there is no flicker at all. The remote that comes with it has a QWERTY keyboard on the back which will allow you to search easier.

The remote comes with a dongle which should be inserted into one of the USB ports. There has been quite a few bad reports for the remote and it can be a bit clunky so you would be better off with a wireless keyboard.

The box was benchmarked on AnTuTu and returned a score of 32,000 which is not the best I have seen but also not the worst. It’s not a new box and has been on the market since 2015 so it’s worth keeping this in mind.

If you install the beta firmware update you can install Kodi from the Play Store and it will run with no problems. The Android 5.1 update will also give you Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound.

It has RCA connectors so if you don’t have a TV with HDMI ports you can use this to connect it.

Pros and Cons

The Good

  • Great design with nice status lights at front
  • MyGica Support is excellent
  • Video playback
  • RCA support
  • Remote with keyboard on back
  • External antenna

The Bad

  • Older technology and specs
  • Remote control can be clunky
  • Android 4.4

MyGica 1800e Firmware Update

How to update the firmware

The beta update for Android 5.1 can be found on the MyGica Support website. Full instructions are also there but I will give you brief instructions on how to do it.

To locate the correct file, go to the MyGica Support website and access the following pages:

Adding the Update to your Box

To download the file to your PC or laptop, insert a SD card and copy the ZIP file. Once it is copied to your SD card you will need to unzip it. You can unzip to your desktop and this will create a new folder.

Then you need to copy that folder to your SD card. Add the SD card to the MyGica box and go to Settings > Software Updates. Select Local Update folder then select the file at the top.

This will power off the box and install the firmware update. It’s worth noting that this will basically reset your box to factory settings so you should back up any files that you may already have stored on the box.

MyGica 1800e on Amazon

This box has an overall rating of 3.7 out of 5 stars based on 46 customer reviews. These reviews are quite varied and a bit of a mixed bag but I wanted to show you some typical extracts.

You can read all of the reviews by clicking here. If you click on the images below it will open up the file for easier reading.

Alternative TV on the ATV 1800e

This media player is great and will give you access to various apps like Netflix or Kodi which are free. You do need a subscription with Netflix and it’s great for watching on-demand movies or TV shows.

If you are planning to use Kodi or another free app like Mobdro you should be aware of the legalities and why I recommend using a VPN to protect your identity.

==>Why Use a VPN?<==

Why You Should use the Latest Version of Kodi

There was a recent security scare with older versions of Kodi and it was discovered that the subtitles had a flaw in them which allowed hackers to get access to your device.

This sent shock waves through the Kodi community and they immediately fixed the problem with version 17.2 but for a while there was millions of users at risk. Another good reason to use a VPN!

Replace your Cable TV with Peace of Mind

The other alternative I want to mention is an IPTV supplier which isn’t free but it is a more viable option for replacing an expensive cable TV subscription. It offers a better quality system and you can easily watch live TV channels with no buffering.

It also comes with a catch up on selected channels which goes back 14 days so if you miss a TV show you can watch it on-demand. There is also a video library with more on-demand content.

How much does it cost?

Prices start at €14.95 per month and this will give you access to 200+ channels from UK, USA, Canada and Scandinavia to name a few countries. I replaced my cable TV subscription after signing up with my supplier NTV and there is no contract.

You can pay monthly or if you prefer you can sign up for longer and keep the costs down. This IPTV service can also be used on any Android TV box like the ATV 1800e.

I brought you this MyGica ATV 1800e review to primarily show how to update the firmware but at the same time it gave me an opportunity to fully review the product.

Would I buy it?

I have to say NO and I would prefer to get a newer box with better specs. If you would like to be notified of more reviews like this or Special Offers when they arise, why not sign up to our Free Newsletter? This will give you automatic entry into all of our FREE Prize Draws.

    Hi Craig,

Great post on the MyGica ATV 1800e. Your post gave excellent instructions on how to update the firmware of the device and why this is important. Thanks for the note about Kodi not being compatible and how to go about getting the MyGica up to date. Didn’t know about the legal issues. But thanks for showing how it could be avoided through the use of a VPN.

    All the best

      Hi Kevon,

Thanks for the nice feedback. I’ glad you found it easy to follow. Yes, a VPN is still the best solution and in most cases it will slow your system down by around 8 to 10% but not in all cases. Plus, it opens up a whole new World of TV when you access other country servers. For me, it’s more important to protect my identity and stay safe at the same time.
