Kodi Is Blocked In UK For Some Addons So Is This The End?

By | November 9, 2017

Kodi is blocked in UK for accessing certain addons and this is being controlled by your ISP. So, what should you do and is it possible to get access back?

According to the Express newspaper online, Sky TV are reporting that Premier League streams are becoming more difficult to find in the UK with some users reportedly giving up trying to find them.

Kodi owners who use the popular TV player to stream football illegally are now finding it harder to gain access to content online. That’s the news from football broadcaster, Sky, who are estimating the majority of streams are now being blocked. Speaking at the Cable and Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia (CASBAA) Conference 2017 in Macau, Matthew Hibbert, Head of Litigation, Sky said: “In terms of the impact on piracy, server blocking has been huge. “Live streams of the Premier League can no longer be easily found in the UK. - The Express Online

The ISPs in UK are now under orders to try and block servers that access live football matches for the Premier League and Scottish Premiership. This is now the Law and they have to comply or face prosecution.

Brian Thompson from Middlesbrough was recently given a 2 year suspended jail sentence for selling fully-loaded Kodi boxes to the general public and other businesses.

The Motion Picture Association of America recently reported that 26 million Kodi users were still accessing pirated content which is 70% of all users Worldwide.

So, is this the end of Kodi for UK users?

First, here is a stat: 1 in 6 Brits now use a VPN or Proxy Server for accessing blocked content. Before you jump into a VPN there's a few things you need to do first.

Why Kodi Blocks Are Working

Since the crackdown on Kodi started in 2016, we have seen laws passed in British and European courts which now deem these streams to be illegal.

Anyone accessing them can be prosecuted in court. That's a fact and it is undisputed. Of course, they're not going to prosecute everyone but they may decide to make an example of some people in the future.

Another problem you are facing is the surveillance that you may be under. In 2016 the UK Parliament passed a new law called the Investigatory Powers Bill which quickly became known as the Snoopers' Charter.

This allows them to effectively spy on you and record your online activities. They are even entitled to hack into your device when you are online and share this information with 50 other government agencies. A scary thought.

Nowadays your ISP can tell what you access by tracking your IP address. This is how they block you from accessing certain servers which also have a traceable IP address.

If you click on a link you may be getting a message that says "no stream available" in whichever Kodi addon you are using. Each ISP is different so first we need to focus on your internet supplier.

How To Remove The Blocks

If you watch the video below you will find instructions on modifying settings for various UK internet providers. Each ISP is different so please watch the video first.

Once you have followed the instructions for your ISP then next step is to keep the blocks off. If your ISP is not listed you may be able to jump to the next step and it may still work without modifying any ISP settings.

How To Keep The Blocks Off

In the UK we are now being told that 17% of the population either use a VPN or proxy server when online or active on a 3G or 4G telephone network.

There are plenty free VPN providers out there and some even offer unlimited data. However, take it from me these are a load of crap and you are wasting your time trying to use them.

They are free for a reason and you are not safe using them. They have lack of servers which means lack of IP addresses and some of them even retain your data logs.

A good VPN will keep the blocks off and allow you to stream safely. A VPN subscription is very affordable now and they are pretty much a necessity with all the cyber crime today. This will keep the blocks off when using Kodi.

I use PureVPN and I've teamed up with them to get you a very unique offer. Right now you can get their VPN for only $1.92 per month, which is a saving of 81%.

Best Addons for Kodi

When the latest version of Kodi was rolled out it looked completely different to previous versions. The whole interface was revamped and it took some time to get familiar with it.

These days when you install Kodi you can do it from the Play Store. If you are using a Fire Stick or another device that doesn't have access to the Play Store you may have to sideload it.

Either way, it now only installs a BASIC version of Kodi with no third-party addons. They have done this to protect themselves from prosecution.

Easiest Way to Access the Best Addons

The easiest way to get full access to all of your favorite addons is to install a custom Kodi Build. This will add a lot of featured addons automatically and when a new build update is available you will be notified by a popup.

This means you will always have addons that are up-to-date and in full working order. There are various custom builds available but the one I like is called No Limits.

It adds a nice wallpaper like the one above (that's the White Walkers Night King from Game of Thrones if you didn't already know) and an easy to use menu.

Check out my video below which shows how to install the No Limits Builds. Once the installation is finished and you re-enter Kodi it will already be set up.

I am a BIG Gunners fan (if I wasn’t I would be disowned lol) I gave up with the sporting channels here in Canada and finding the games online have become harder and harder to find. Luckily down the street (actually a subway ride and then a trip on a streetcar) gets me to a pub that hosts strickly Gunner games but we have to be at the pub for 0700 hours EST which is a real pain as the subway doesnt start running till 0800 hours on the weekends. I don’t mind 2 feet and a heartbeat with a fresh coffee to get there and subway home but my grams, 88 years young and probably one of the biggest Gooners around can not make the trek anymore and there’s no one I rather watch the match with than her. Your website has brought some new hope into watching them again with her. I have an Apple box, if I can’t get it to work through there, it will be going up for sale and I will be getting an Android box that will run it, I think Kodi even makes a box over here. A little more research I think now. Thank you for putting a website like this together, it has just made my football mornings with my grams that much better again, plus no snowy walks in the morning. Cheers mate!

      Hi Jair,

Thanks for taking time to leave some feedback, it’s much appreciated. I love Canada and I’ve spent some time in Calgary and Banff, beautiful part of the World. I know how you feel mate, trying to watch the games on the other side of the World isn’t easy.

You would definitely benefit from my IPTV service and you could watch it on your Apple TV box. That’s how I used to watch Kodi when it was called XBMC, I had a jailbroken ATV2.

That way you would get all the Arsenal games live. No more trekking through the snow.

    Hi Craig,

I use Kodi and keep it update often (latest version is Krypton 17.5). I also live in Canada where I am starting to see a lot of advertising to get a VPN to stream content such as sports. If Kodi is blocked in the U.K then I am sure other countries will follow suit. What about the VPN services, will they not eventually be targeted? Then the only option will be to just subscribe to IPTV providers. The last thing would be to get taken to court from the internet police seeing what I am watching and if it is legit or not. But I do know that for every add-on that taken down, another one comes out to take its place. Thank you for sharing the Kodi tips and recommending the best addons for Kodi.

      Hi Sam,

Thanks for taking time to leave some feedback, it means a lot. It’s only certain streams that are being blocked in the UK but it’s a worrying trend. I can’t see how they could target VPN providers, that would open up a can of worms.

VPNs are used by big businesses so the logistics involved would be massive. I think the only way we can access content that is blocked is by way of a good VPN. You’re right about other addons popping up faster than ones that get closed but these servers will also get blocked by the UK ISPs so a VPN is the only way to go.

    Hi Craig,

I use Kodi all of the time here in America. I am always seeing news of how authorities are cracking down on the usage of Kodi over there in the UK. I’m pretty sure that it will eventually make its way over here as well. This post is a great way to keep the blocks off. Thanks for sharing!

Also, I was looking to install another Kodi custom build. The one you recommended works perfectly. It is so easy to navigate. Thanks for this suggestion.

      Hi Chaddrick,

Thanks for the feedback. Good to hear you are using Kodi in USA. Of course, it’s not just the UK that is affected by the crackdown. A lot of Kodi addons are disappearing which affects all of us Worldwide.

Good to hear the Kodi build works for you. There is another really good Kodi build called Titanium. It’s not as demanding as No Limits Magic. You should check it out, I’m sure you will like it.
