HiMedia are well known for producing high end media players. This HiMedia H8 Plus review will evaluate the price tag and check out the pros and cons.
I previously reviewed the HiMedia Q10 Pro Media Player which comes with a 3.5″ SATA internal HDD reader. The H8 Plus is a lighter version but the quality hasn’t been sacrificed.
But is it over-priced?

The box has a stunning brushed aluminum casing and is well finished in true HiMedia style. You can tell it is very high quality with a very smart LED display on the front.
It has RCA connections so if you don’t have a TV with HDMI port this will allow you to turn your older TV into a Smart TV. The double antenna will offer powerful dual band WiFi and the Gigabit Ethernet will ensure fast and stable streaming.
Ventilation holes on each side will allow any heat dissipation.

This TV box was benchmarked on AnTuTu and returned a total score of 39,457 which is on a par with the S912 SoC. It comes pre-loaded with several apps including Kodi 15.2, MX Player, Google Play Store, Skype and Airplay.
The download speeds were approx. 85Mb/s which is decent but not the highest I have seen. This is more than fast enough for streaming content online and it performs well running Kodi.
The HEVC/H.265 will give you 200% better compression than H.264 and 2GB of RAM is enough to handle multi-tasking between apps. The OTA updater will allow you to check and install any future firmware updates without having to install manually.
Video playback was decent using Kodi and it also comes with a dynamic refresh rate feature which will automatically switch between file protocol. Dolby Digital 5.1 works without any issues.
Unlike the HiMedia H8 this Plus version comes with Bluetooth so any game controllers will be compatible. It handles games as expected with no glitches.
Pros and Cons
Things I liked
- Quality metal finish
- Double antenna for improved wireless performance
- Gigabit Ethernet
- LED display
- RCA and HDMI connections
- OTA updater
Things I didn’t like
- No air mouse or keyboard
- Price is slightly higher than expected
- Android 5.1
Buying the H8 Plus on Amazon
Amazon are one of my favorite stores and you know you are well covered when it comes to refunds or replacements, should the need arise. This media player has a high rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars from 4 customer reviews.
HiMedia customer support come in for some high praise from existing customers. I have included a couple of extracts below from customers who purchased this on Amazon.
Prices on Amazon do tend to go up or down through time so it is worth checking out the latest price before making any educated decision on whether to but this media player or not.
So, is this TV Box worth the price tag?
In my opinion, it is a little high for the specs that it offers. However, if you are looking for a high quality product then it certainly ticks a lot of boxes (no pun intended).
A Word of Caution
If you are planning to use this box with Kodi or another free app that access live TV channels I would definitely recommend using a good VPN that won’t affect the streaming performance. It’s super easy to use a VPN now with these apps and it will protect you against any possible prosecution.
Also, you should download the latest version of Kodi from the Play Store due to a recent security risk which identified an issue with older versions. These older versions (pre 17.1) could allow hackers to access your system.
