Do You Need A VPN For Kodi Or Is It Safe To Use Without One?

By | August 22, 2017

If you are unsure if it is legal to stream using Kodi then you may be aware of the current crackdown. So, do you need a VPN for Kodi? Get the lowdown here.

Kodi is used by millions of people Worldwide. In the UK alone it is estimated that between 5 and 7 million internet users are streaming free content with Kodi or other TV apps like Mobdro.

That’s more than 10% of the population and that’s just the UK! It is very popular in other countries Worldwide so you can see the problem facing the authorities.

But is it safe to use Kodi without a VPN?

This was previously a bit of a grey area until recently. In the UK the authorities have gone to the Courts in the UK and also the European Courts and they can now prosecute anyone selling Kodi boxes that are fully loaded.

This means Kodi is pre-installed with addons that allow access to material that is subject to copyright. Amazon have recently stopped suppliers from selling fully loaded Kodi boxes.

So, Is Kodi Legal?

Kodi itself is not illegal, it is only the content (addons) that some developers are adding. A lot of these addons have already been shutdown and law suits are forthcoming.

TVAddons was one of the old favorites that suddenly went offline. Others include Phoenix, Exodus and Navi X. These have been around for a long time but are no longer available from the old repositories. However, there are alternatives.

To answer the question, it IS safe to use without a VPN but only if you know that you are not accessing any illegal streams. These streams may be contained in an addon that also has legal content so it’s a bit of a minefield.

Benefits of a VPN with Kodi

The most obvious benefit is online privacy and anonymous surfing. However, there are many other advantages of using a VPN with Kodi. In some cases, an ISP may throttle the bandwidth during peak times.

They won’t admit to this but it does go on. I know this from personal experience and when I am connected to my VPN my browsing and online streaming actually increases in speed.

Not all ISPs do this but here in Malaysia it happens a lot. Other plus points of a good VPN include the ability to use it across multiple devices for one account.

So, if you download the app from the Play Store you can connect to your VPN on your other devices. I use it on my Android phone, Samsung Galaxy Tab and MacBook.

Another benefit is being able to access content that is restricted by location (geo-blocked). When you are overseas you can connect to a country server and access sites or media that would otherwise be unavailable.

How to Setup a VPN with Kodi

This is the easy part.

When you have downloaded and installed the VPN application it’s a simple case of connecting to a VPN server. Once you are connected everything you do on your device is through the VPN.

Things you can access once connected:

  • BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, etc.
  • Netflix in any country
  • Blocked websites
  • Secure sites

When you use Kodi with a VPN your IP address is masked. This means your ISP won’t know what you are streaming or accessing. Your online activity is encrypted in a VPN tunnel.

Why Use a VPN with Kodi?

This may seem obvious but if you don’t use a VPN your ISP will know what you are using it for. In the UK they are now under obligation to block any servers that host illegal streams.

Just last weekend, a lot of Kodi users faced a blackout for Premier League games in the UK. In the USA, your browsing history is up for auction to the highest bidder.

This will eventually result in Law Suits and it is already happening with some addon developers. It’s only a matter of time before they go after the users.

A lot of countries now have surveillance powers that enable them to check what you are doing online. The Snoopers’ Charter in the UK was eventually passed in 2016 and the authorities can even hack into your PC or laptop.

Best VPN for Kodi

There are many good VPN providers that offer a quality service at reasonable prices. Unfortunately a free VPN won’t cut the mustard for several reasons. Usually the free VPNs will have limited servers and bandwidth.

This means you won’t be fully protected so you want to ensure there are a few things included in their package. Some of these are listed below:

  • Unlimited bandwidth and server switching
  • No data retention logs
  • 256-bit data encryption as a minimum
  • Online customer support
  • Multiple devices for one account

My preferred VPN provider is PureVPN and they meet all of the above criteria. Plus, it won’t cost you an arm and a leg if you sign up with them. At the time of writing you can get their VPN for $3.25 per month if you sign up for 2 years ($78 total).

This is one of the cheapest VPN subscriptions you can find and one million customers can’t be all wrong. They support all major platforms and operating systems.

Thanks Craig for clearing up a lot of things. I am interested in both Kodi and using a VPN. It does scare me about using these illegal streams. I mean I don’t want to do it obviously.

I like how VPNs can help you to access geo-restrictive videos. But is this not illegal to do. I’m not sure. Maybe you can clarify that.

      Hi Owain,

Using a VPN is perfectly legal. Accessing geo-restricted content is one of the grey areas but there is no law that says you can’t do it so until then it’s legal. Obviously I cannot speak for the law in every country but I don’t know of any law against it anywhere.

It’s only recently that laws were passed in UK and EU to allow the authorities the power to block servers and prosecute people. Hope this clears it up a bit.
