DigiXstream DX5 Plus | $259 Of Genius Or Is It A Rip-Off?

By | September 29, 2017

Thinking of investing in the DigiXstream DX5 Plus? The manufacturer says it will blow you away, but find out why this media player is over-priced.

Let me start by saying that I have nothing to gain if you do or don't buy this Android streaming device. I am merely offering my opinion on whether or not it is worth the price tag.

$259 is a lot of money for a TV box. I know this from experience, but there are some consumers who may think this is the norm for something like this.

I wanted to write this article after seeing the DX5 advertised on Amazon. I did some research into the company and its latest media player. I did not test this box but I have seen enough of these to know if it is value for money, or if the customer is being ripped off.

Nobody likes to be scammed when there are cheaper alternatives. Take it from me, you could save yourself upwards of $175 - JUST BY READING THIS ARTICLE!

Who are DigiXstream?

DigiXstream are a manufacturer of streaming media players and are based in San Antonio, TX. That's a lovely part of the World, home to the wonderful River Walk, the Alamo and the San Antonio Spurs if my memory serves me right.

I visited San Antonio a few times back in 2002/3 when I lived in Houston, TX. That was before we had streaming media players like the DX5 Plus.

This company also manufacture the DX4, DX4 Plus and DX5 streaming devices. They have a referral program and if you become a reseller you can earn 20% from each sale. That just show how much profit they must be making from one of these devices!

They also sell remote controls, wireless keyboards, amplified antennae, power supplies and you can even buy a DigiXstream golf shirt or baseball cap from their site which I found a bit odd.

I previously did some research into DigiXstream Reviews for the DX4 because I noticed they were getting a lot of bad press. Some of the reviews were very critical but the price was nowhere near the DX5 Plus.

The latest greatest DX5 Plus has newer and better specs but will it blow you away as they suggest?

    DigiXstream Price

They have a lot of resellers who are affiliated to the company. These resellers earn commission and also supply their own technical support.

The best price I've seen is on Amazon and this will save you $40 compared to the offical DigiXstream website where the price is quoted as $299!

If you buy from Amazon you will get fast delivery too, especially if you are already an Amazon Prime member. Prices do fluctuate in time so it's worth checking out the latest price before deciding.

    DigiXstream Set Up

The initial set up is very easy and there is a video which shows you the steps to follow. This is for first-time setup and is a one-off procedure only.

The video explains how to set the language, display, network and install the TV App Store and Kodi. The main installs are done with the Wizard installation which sets everything up for you.

This is great if you are worried that you may not be able to install programs or apps manually and it is designed to offer a plug and play system.

    Streaming with the DigiXstream

This media player takes advantage of Kodi which is free open source software. Previously known as XBMC, it has grown in popularity over the last few years with lightning speed.

Kodi itself isn't illegal but you can find yourself in hot water if you stream content that is subject to copyright. Now that your online history is available through your ISP, they can tell what you are streaming.

The only way to protect yourself is to stream anonymously. More and more Kodi fans are turning to VPNs to keep them safe. You can also unlock content that is geo-restricted or blocked.

Read more on my other article for detailed instructions on how to use a VPN with Kodi.

    The Verdict

Whilst I haven't tested this box there are no reported issues from any of the users. In fact, most of them praise the quality and they have not complained of speed issues.

Of course, the specs ensures this box is closer to the high end of the quality spectrum but you can buy similar boxes with these specs and at a fraction of the price.

    My Advice To You

If you want to keep costs down but you are worried about installing and setting up Kodi I can recommend a couple of options for you.

    1. Buy a different TV box and install a Custom Kodi Build

If you check out my alternatives below you will find a TV box with at least the same quality and specs as the DX5 Plus.

If you purchase one of these boxes it's a simple case of downloading Kodi from the Play Store and installing a custom build. This costs nothing so you only pay for the TV box.

DigiXstream are effectively installing a custom Kodi build and passing the costs onto the consumer when these builds are free. Sure, they offer customer support but it's not difficult to install a build.

Check out my other article for adding a Custom Kodi Build. Once this is added, you will have access to a huge selection of featured addons which will give you full access to all the live TV channels.

    2. Subscribe to an IPTV service

This may put you off, hearing the word subscribe. When I decided to try an IPTV subscription in 2016 I was shocked how good it is. Plus, I could get premium TV channels from various countries.

There is no contract and subscriptions start at only €14.95 per month. There is a nice menu and it also comes with a 14 day Catch Up service. Set up is minimal and you can also get a 3 day Free Trial.

    Some Alternatives

I have reviewed many TV boxes but there's obviously a few that tend to stand out from the rest. Having personally owned and/or tested these boxes, I know that they are value for money.

You can read my full review for each of these by clicking on the links below.

I am a fan of android tv boxes and i am using amazon fire stick, it surely is different than digixstream.
It cost me around 39$ to buy amazon fire stick, but 259$ is quite a lot.

I think it’s because the content shown is very different from what it is available on the fire stick. I really like the option you suggested to use kodi, i had no idea what it was , but i researched it an found it useful
      Thank you

        Hi Sanket,

Thanks for leaving some feedback, good to hear that you now understand a bit more about Kodi and how it works on an Android TV box. You could install it on the Fire Stick too and access live TV channel links.

I would make sure you use a VPN to protect against copyright infringement. IPVanish work well on the Fire Stick.

A few years back, I paid $250 for DX4. I didn’t know anything about KODI. BUYER BEWARE!!! Just buy a FireStck or FireTV device, or an Android box, and install your own APK’s or Kodi. Digixstream burned me, and now I set up friends devices for free and give them some maintenance advice. A fun hobby

Thanks for this post. I think it can really help people getting more information about the cheaper options out there, which is something great. Do you happen to know anything about Portuguese TV? I teach Portuguese to foreigners and sometimes I have students that ask me how they can watch Portuguese tv while outside of Portugal. I am not very well informed about this and I wonder if something like what you explained exists for Portuguese TV. Thank you and keep up the good work =)

Hi Mia, thanks for the comment. I’m afraid I don’t know anything about getting Portuguese TV. My site is primarily designed for UK expats although my IPTV supplier also includes channels from other countries. You may be able to find some channels on Kodi via one of the IPTV addons. They have channels Worldwide.
